Starting Chosen Discourse Project – Method and Choices

Discourse 1- ShopRite of Little Falls

Brief Summary- The ShopRite of Little Falls is a Staple to the Township of Little Falls. The Supermarket has been their over 70 years and continues to provide employment to over 400 workers in Little Falls and the surrounding neighborhoods. Working their for almost three years now you learn the skills and trades of what it means to become a member of Local 1262 and working at a grocery store.

Possible Data Sources- Some possible data sources that one can look into when providing some information on ShopRite is employees at ShopRite in more than one department. Also you can go up higher in management and talk to Human Resources and Department managers as well. Also websites such as glass door have a look into a company and some positions within that company.

Initial Thoughts- Employees such as cashiers and baggers where most of the employees are and these are the lowest paying entry level jobs within the store. They are on the front lines everyday with the customers and they have to deal with all the problems. Managers are a great way because if managers can make their employees below them happier, then that will benefit everyone especially the customers.

Discourse 2- Teaching Elementary Kids

Brief Summary- As an Elementary Education Major at UNE I want to become a teacher in the K-8 field after graduation. Everyone has gone to school when they were younger and we all think that they just know what to do but their is so much work and methods and strategies within lesson planning and performing in classroom. Many kids in college also don’t understand what education majors have to do. Whether that means teaching phonics, or introducing the number line for the first time, their is a way to do something and it takes a certain person to become an effective teacher.

Possible Data Sources- Some possible data sources include past experiences, my family members. I also have my education classes and my fieldwork.

Initial Thoughts- Teaching is a complex discourse because there are so many ways besides grades to note progress. Teachers can impact students lives everyday whether that is positive or negative. Also even if continue to write a paper about the discourse of teaching elementary kids, no kid is the same and no two days in the classroom are the same. the field is very demanding and you truly don’t understand until you are in the classroom with your class.

Discourse 3- Sales Associate at Aeropostale

Brief Summary- Your everyday retail employee at a trend setting chain such as Aeropostale. You learn the ins and outs of the demanding world of teen shopping at the mall. From folding jeans and shirts to ringing up customers, and dealing with returns you deal with it all. There’s certain ways to fold clothes when putting them on displays and how to put the clothes in the bag when they are paying. Also how to set up the store and other things.

Possible Data Sources-  Employees such as sales associates are  most of the employees are and these are the lowest paying entry level jobs within the store. They are on the front lines everyday with the customers and they have to deal with all the problems. Teacher’s Example-Rally Car Racing
Rally car clubs are a community of regular people interested in cars and off-road track racing. They modify stock vehicles and race them on weekends. There are rules, regular practices involving social events around races, helping other drivers with their cars, and more.

Possible data sources: Rulebook for a race; terms in use in rally car; an article from a rally car periodical (magazine); observations from a rally car event; interviews with a participant or team.

Initial thoughts: The rulebook will offer specifics about the sign systems/language, the ways that words connect to specific practices/activities, the identities in the Discourse, and the relationships between those identities. An article from a rally car magazine might offer additional pieces of language, and may show the ways that words connect or disconnect things in the Discourse or the values/social goods. Interviews might also be helpful in these ways.
